America 250: National Initiatives
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the official founding of our country. In preparation for this historic milestone, Congress established the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission in 2016 as a nonpartisan initiative to engage every American in commemorating the occasion.
Since that time, every state has signed on to participate in the celebration in its own way, from parades, concerts and fireworks to historical and educational initiatives. The official website, www.america250.org, lists many of the opportunities for individuals and organizations to become involved. Highlights include:
America Gives
The goal of America Gives is to make 2026 a record-setting year of volunteer service. Individuals and organizations across the country are encouraged to log their service hours at america250.org, adding to the more than 300,000 hours already documented.
America’s Invitation
America’s Field Trip invites students in grades 3–12 to describe what America means to them. The national contest will reward 250 students with either a special behind-the-scenes field trip experience this summer or a cash prize. Entries must be submitted through america250.org prior to March 31, 2026. https://america250.org/fieldtrip/
Our American Story
Our American Story is a nationwide initiative to collect the largest archive of American stories ever created. Participants are invited to nominate a living person whose story they believe should be shared and preserved. Nominations may include individuals from all walks of life, from friends and relatives to community leaders, educators and more.

Texas Initiatives
Here in Texas, a Joint Resolution of the 87th Texas Legislature, SCR23, signed by Governor Greg Abbott on May 28, 2021, established the Texas America250 Commission “to help celebrate the semiquincentennial of the United States.” A website, texasamerica250 lists events from across the state and ways to get involved, including a partnership with the Texas Veterans omission to collect Texas veterans’ military stories to create a traveling or digital exhibit to showcase the service and sacrifices of military veterans. The “Why I served” survey can be accessed at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/USAVets250
America250 has a Facebook page that updates frequently with events and happenings. The hope is Americans of every age will participate in a meaningful way to celebrate the USA’s 250th anniversary.
